Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge is a brilliant seaman who has never fit the textbook officer mold, and he has always wanted to command a nuclear submarine. Given one final chance to clean up his record, he instead finds Admiral Graham, his nemesis, stacking the deck against him. Graham assigns Dodge to the Stingray, a diesel-powered World War II submarine that can barely stay afloat, with a crew of maladjusted, mistake-prone misfits. When Dodge is tagged as the enemy in a crucial war game and ordered to take on the U.S. Navy's best, he must find a way to succeed against the odds.
