Aibileen Clark is a middle-aged African American maid who has devoted much of her life to caring for white children while grieving the recent loss of her only son. Minny Jackson, another African American housekeeper, struggles to support her financially troubled family, often losing jobs because of her outspoken nature and clashes with employers. Meanwhile, Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a young white college graduate, returns to her hometown and discovers that the maid who raised her has mysteriously vanished without explanation. As their lives gradually become connected, the experiences of these three women reveal the complicated social divisions of Jackson, Mississippi, where wealthy white families depend heavily on domestic workers while maintaining strict racial boundaries that keep those same women marginalized and excluded from their everyday lives.
