Old wood carver Mr. Meacham has long entertained local children with stories of a fierce dragon deep in the Pacific Northwest woods. His daughter Grace, a forest ranger, considers them tall tales until she encounters Pete, a mysterious 10-year-old with no family or home who says he lives in the woods with a giant green dragon named Elliott. Pete's description of Elliott closely matches the dragon from Mr. Meacham's stories. With help from Natalie, an 11-year-old whose father Jack owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to learn where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about the dragon.
