In 1939, Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer leaves his family to lead a Himalayan expedition. World War II breaks out, and the arrogant Harrer becomes an Allied prisoner of war. He escapes with a fellow detainee to Lhasa, Tibet, where he befriends the 14-year-old Dalai Lama, a relationship that transforms his outlook on life.
