Corrupt fight promoter Nick Benko hires unemployed sportswriter Eddie Willis to promote his protégé, Toro Moreno, a massive but unskilled Argentinian boxer with a feeble punch and fragile jaw. Benko leverages Willis's reputation for integrity to arrange fixed fights that propel the naive Moreno to the #1 contender spot. The sadistic reigning champion, Buddy Brannen, resents Toro's publicity and promises to brutalize him in the ring, forcing Eddie to choose between revealing the truth or staying silent.
