Following the Cold War, a breakaway Russian republic armed with nuclear warheads emerges as a worldwide threat. U.S. submarine Capt. Frank Ramsey assigns the relatively inexperienced but highly recommended Lt. Cmdr. Ron Hunter to the USS Alabama, which may be the only vessel capable of stopping Armageddon. As Ramsey pushes for aggressive action, Hunter, fearing they will trigger rather than prevent a catastrophe, leads a potential mutiny to stop him.
