Perpetually single music industry executive Harry Sanborn brings his latest trophy girlfriend, Marin, to her mother's beach house in the Hamptons for a weekend. They are surprised to find Marin's mother, playwright Erica Barry, also staying there. Erica is scandalized by their relationship and Harry's sexist attitude. When Harry suffers a heart attack, his doctor prescribes bedrest, forcing him to remain at the Barry home. Under Erica's care and his doctor's supervision, a love triangle gradually develops.
