Benjamin Britten's last opera hauntingly captures the grandeur and shabbiness of a Venice gripped by disease. It traces the moral and physical decline of writer Aschenbach, whose fixation on a boy's beauty brings humiliation and death. Robert Tear takes the demanding title role opposite Alan Opie as the various baritone parts. Britten turned the Polish family and Tadzio into dancers, choreographed here by Martha Clarke. This Glyndebourne production is directed by Stephen Lawless and conducted by Graeme Jenkins.
