In the late sixteenth century, a group of musicians accompanies Anna, a young woman bitten by a tarantula, on a pilgrimage to San Paolo di Galatina in northern Puglia. Along the way they meet extraordinary characters and have adventures, most notably the Pope's envoy sent to investigate the violent crisis shaking the region—a form of exorcism with dancing and music called tarantism. When he tries to tell the faithful that a tarantula bite cannot cause such upheavals, the bishop involuntarily witnesses the phenomenon's power. For Anna and her friends, the only remedy is their forefathers' age-old tradition.
