Inspired by Vilis Lācis' novel, the film portrays the Zītari family as a model of Latvian national history. When World War I begins, the patriarchal life of Captain Andrejs, his wife Alvīne, and their children Kārlis, Ings, Ernests, Elza, and Janka is disrupted. Kārlis volunteers for the front, Ingus vanishes on long sea voyages, and the family evacuates to the distant Altai region to escape German occupation. There, difficult living conditions and the post-revolutionary political situation affect each member. By the time return to Latvia is possible, Andrejs and Alvīne have died, and the younger Zītaris cannot preserve their father's home, as all property is stolen.
